Chapter Sixteen
Nik could tell he’d put her guard back up, but he didn’t care.
She was trying to play it safe, and that he couldn’t allow.
She thought her “rules” would help her maintain distance, as she’d done when they dated before. But look where that had gotten them.
But not this time. This time he was learning from his mistakes. He was battering down her barricades, storming the citadel. Taking everything he wanted.
He’d come to grips with the fact that she rung his bell like no one else. That despite five million reasons he shouldn’t want her, shouldn’t enjoy being with her, much less be desperate to fuck her, he did and he was.
So that was that. He wasn’t going to analyze it or whine about it. He was just going for it. Because lust was as good a reason as any he could think of to motivate a relationship. Trust was overrated.
There was no doubt she wanted him, too, with her hot little hips grinding into him even as she tried to hold back, her cheeks flushed with passion, her blue eyes glazed with need.
For his part, he was man enough to admit he wanted to bed her more than he wanted to breathe. Wanted to unbutton each tantalizing button on her sensible white blouse and bare her to his gaze. Wanted to yank up that practical skirt and bury himself so deep inside her she had no place left to hide, no secrets left to keep, no false words left to offer up.
“Please, Nik.” She trembled against him. “Say okay.”
“You set the terms, but I get to renegotiate when I like.”
“This isn’t some business transaction.” She pushed against him, freeing herself.
“Isn’t it always?” He resisted the urge to chase after her. “I’ve spent my whole life bartering, wheeling and dealing to survive. This feels as critical.” The back of his neck went hot at the look on her face, but he stuck to his guns. “I’ll ask you every step of the way. I won’t do a thing unless you agree.” He raised one eyebrow, a purposeful dare. “But you’ll have to stay true to your own agenda. I won’t hesitate to push mine.”
The challenge in her gaze made him even harder. “This doesn’t have to be a battle.”
“I think it does with you, and in the end, we’ll both win.” He crowded close, invading her space, but not actually touching her. “Step one. A kiss?”
She shot him a look of annoyance. “You don’t have to be so literal.”
He dropped his head until their lips were inches apart. “We will discuss everything.” He brushed his lips across hers just once. A taunt. “When you say yes, I’ll take that pouty lower lip into my mouth and nip.” He pressed his mouth against her ear. “When you say yes, I’ll run my teeth along the sensitive cord at your neck.”
“N–now?” The breathless tremble in her voice was damn satisfying—and hot as hell. “Wh–what about the people on the plane?”
He stilled. “What about them?”
Her cheeks flashed hot.
